Personal statement

Positions:

Director of Teaching in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Associate Dean Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (Faculty of Science)
Teaching Fellow in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Background:

I completed a PhD in Pure mathematics at the Unviersity of St Andrews. After a career break, I joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Strathclyde in 2013 as a Teaching Associate. Since then, I have taken on a variety of roles within the department and Faculty, reflecting my commitment to inclusive teaching, equality, diversity and inclusion and academic leadership.

I am currently Director of Teaching in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, overseeing the provision, development and delivery of both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. I also serve as Associate Dean for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Faculty of Scince, where I work to ensure that the Faculty promotes an inclusive and supportive environment for all students and staff. I am also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and acts as the London Mathematical Society's representative.

Previously, I served as second year co-ordinator from 2017 to 2023, chaired the Department's Equality and Diversity Committee from 2019, and led our successful application for a Bronze Award in 2024.

Beyond my departmental and Faculty responsibilities, I work closely with colleagues through networks such as the Senior Fellows at Strathclyde, the University's Leadership in Teaching and Learning network, and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Collaborative Writing Groups. This work focuses on:

  • Embedding inclusive learning and teaching practices
  • Working with students as partners
  • Breaking down barriers to participation in higher education
  • Contextualising the curriculum
  • Embedding Education for Sustainable Development

Collarboration with students and collegaues is central to my approach, ensuring that teaching, learning and assessment along with research are inclusive, innovative and impactful.
